Putting aside my shiny shipper tinhat for a sec, that was literally the first time Hannibal’s initiated physical contact with Will and it’s no coincidence that it happened just then. He just convinced Will (a cop for years, and now FBI) to lie about a murder. He’s made him an accomplice in a homocide, an accessory after the fact. Hannibal’s got Will so closely roped in that he’s willing to jeopardize his entire life and career with the bureau for him and Abigail, their surrogate daugther, reborn in their bloody hands (don’t tell me that scene in the pilot doesn’t make you think of a birth). He elegantly plays on Will’s extreme guilt and trauma over killing Abigail’s father (“Who knows Abigail better than you and I? Or the burden she bears? If you go to Jack you murder Abigail’s future.”) and uses that to pull him (paddle him out?) further and further away from the shore of sanity and the real world.

Hannibal’s choice of words when he says “Do I need to call my lawyer, Will?” is another method of guilt-tripping Will into doing what he wants. He pointedly asks do I need to, Will?, using his name and framing it as a question, as in, “you’d be making me do this, and any horrible consequences would be ultimately your fault”. And Will shakes his head no, not even using his own voice to speak anymore and Hannibal’s got him right where he wants him and can’t resist getting closer. He purposefully keeps using the words “we” and “us”, “what we are doing here is the right thing”, simultaneously verbally deepening their bond and implicating Will so far into his story it’s gonna be impossible to untangle the threads.

Will, Mr-no-eye-contact-please, accepted two breaches into his personal space in this episode. The hug with Alana was caring and honest, and he clearly needed this small human comfort so much (continuity from the kiss) that he nearly loses it. Hannibal touching his shoulder however, is wildly opposite, it’s an affirmation of power and control. He’s asserting his dominance, celebrating his victory. Thing is, from Hannibal’s point of view? That was also probably his version of a genuine act of care and love. TL;DR, basically, if Hannibal’s going down, he’s dragging Will Graham down with him.

Jeff Davis: Now, as a writer, some scene takes forever to write, and they just drag along, and you feel like death at your computer. This scene took me 15 minutes to write, and it came out to be one of my favorite scenes. For two reasons: Dylan’s performance in this scene is extraordinary, and this was actually picked up by our director Russel, and his direction of it was beautiful.

Jeff: But this is one of our heavier episodes, and relying on Dylan O’Brien in this first scene is unusual for us, to bring the drama. But the amazing thing about him is he’s a really good dramatic actor.

Jeff: One of the things I really like to do in scenes like this, especially as this scene is what I like to call “take a meeting scene,” you always want to build it around something visual. So I thought of the idea of he’s knotting the lacrosse stick and he’s constantly toying with that knot and the reason is he feels like his life is unraveling. So subconsciously you’re telling the viewer, this is what’s happening to him. He’s not just talking to us, he’s showing what he’s feeling by constantly pulling that knot tighter and tighter. Now the panic attacks go back to Stiles’ history with his mom dying.
